Pidgin - the universal chat client

Nowadays, almost every computer user out there has at least one instant messaging application that he uses on a daily or maybe weekly basis. There are others however who have friends or multiple networks, so using several applications at the same time might be a problem sometimes, especially since the number of such tools is continuously growing. No matter if you use Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, IRC, Jabber or ICQ, you can always give Pidgin a try.

In just a few words, Pidgin is a multi-protocol instant messaging software that gives users the possibility to chat on multiple networks at the same time, without having to run several applications. It comes with support for quite a wide variety of instant messaging protocols, which means everything should fit like a glove when it comes to your communication needs.

Installing Pidgin is just as easy as riding a bike, although you have a few options to consider before starting the actual installation. You'll need the GTK+ runtime environment, but if you wish, you can opt for an offline installer which also comprises all files you'll need to run Pidgin.

If everything is in the right place, you should now be able to open Pidgin and start configuring your account. Basically, it's all just a matter of minutes, but you'll need some computer knowledge, or at least the necessary information, when trying to set up your instant messaging accounts.

The interface is quite simple and basic, but we admit a more modern look would be a great addition. Or at least, a more advanced theme support for those who wish to add some personal flavor to the application. It has emoticon support and beside the ones already included in the software, you can also find some more on the Internet, including those belonging to Yahoo, just to get a more genuine experience.

Functionality can always be enhanced by installing additional plugins, some of them already bundled into the application, while others can be downloaded from the Internet.

Overall, Pidgin is a godsend for those who use the Internet for chatting on multiple networks. It's free, it's extremely light on computer resources and can be used on almost every operating system besides Windows.
